Plug-in solar in the UK: the complete guide
Plug-in solar became legal in Great Britain on 27 August 2026. This guide explains what these devices are, how they work, what the rules allow, who they suit — and, just as importantly, what they will not do.
What plug-in solar is
A plug-in solar device is a small, pre-assembled generator. One or two panels are connected to a microinverter, and the microinverter's output cable ends in a normal domestic plug. You put the panels somewhere sunny — a garden room roof, a flat outbuilding roof, a ground-mounted A-frame or a balcony facade — and plug the lead into a socket. The electricity flows into your home's circuits and is used by whatever is switched on at the time.
The difference from conventional rooftop solar is scale and installation. A rooftop system is designed for your property, wired into the consumer unit by a qualified installer and typically rated in the several-kilowatt range. A plug-in device is a consumer product with a hard output cap, no permanent wiring and no scaffolding. It is closer to buying an appliance than commissioning a building project.
How it works, step by step
- Panels. Sunlight hits the photovoltaic panels and produces direct current (DC). Output rises and falls with light levels through the day.
- Microinverter. The inverter converts DC into 230V alternating current (AC) synchronised with the mains, and enforces the output cap.
- Plug and socket. The AC output goes into an ordinary socket outlet on a dedicated plug — never through an extension lead, adaptor or multi-way block.
- Your circuits. Electricity flows to the nearest load. If your kettle, laptop or fridge is drawing power, it uses the solar first; the grid only makes up the shortfall.
- Consumer unit and meter. Anything you do not use passes back through the consumer unit towards the meter. There is no export payment scheme for plug-in devices, so unused generation has no financial value to you.
What changed on 27 August 2026
Before that date there was no route to connect a plug-and-play generator to a domestic socket in Great Britain within the connection rules. The change created a defined category of low-output, battery-free devices that can be connected by a householder, provided the product meets a published specification and the connection is registered with the network operator afterwards.

Who plug-in solar suits
The best matches are households with a steady daytime electrical load and an unshaded place to put panels that is not the main house roof. Garden rooms and home offices are the strongest case: the panels generate exactly when the laptop, monitor, heater and kettle are running. Garden bars, workshops, studios and simulator rooms follow the same logic — a background drain during daylight hours.
Flats with balconies are the other clear case. A vertical east- or west-facing panel generates less over the year than a tilted south-facing one, but it produces a flatter curve across the morning and afternoon, which can suit a household that is in and out.
Who it suits less well
- Homes that are empty all day with no fridge, freezer or standing load.
- Heavily shaded gardens, or north-facing frontages with no alternative mounting spot.
- Anyone hoping to replace a rooftop system. At 800VA the output is a useful trim on a bill, not a way to go off-grid.
What plug-in solar will not do
- It will not work in a power cut. The inverter disconnects when the grid supply is lost, for the safety of network staff.
- It will not store electricity. Batteries are outside this category.
- It will not earn export income. Generation you do not use is not paid for.
- It will not heat your home. 800VA is roughly a third of a typical fan heater.
What it might save
Savings depend on location, orientation, shade, your tariff and — above all — how much electricity you use during daylight. Government modelling published alongside the change illustrates annual savings in the low hundreds of pounds for well-matched installations, and considerably less where daytime use is low. Read the assumptions yourself in the DESNZ final stage impact assessment (PDF). Treat any single headline figure with caution; ranges with stated assumptions are the only honest way to present this.
What to check before buying
- Is the exact product — make and model — listed as Compliant on the ENA Connect Direct register? A similar-looking import is not the same thing.
- Does the AC output stay within 800VA and 3.5A?
- Is the panel capacity within 2,000Wp, and do you need an assessment above 960Wp?
- Is there a mounting kit suited to your surface — flat roof, ground or balcony rail?
- Is the cable long enough to reach a socket without an extension lead?
- What is the warranty on the panels, the inverter and the mounting hardware?
How to register
Registration happens after installation and is the householder's responsibility. You submit details of the device and your address so the network operator knows what is connected on their network.
