Plug-in solar in Northern Ireland: current status

The short version: the change that makes plug-in solar workable from 27 August 2026 applies to Great Britain — England, Scotland and Wales. It does not currently extend to Northern Ireland.

The position today

Plug-in solar in Great Britain rests on a specific package: a published technical specification for the device, listing on the ENA Connect Direct register, and connection and registration under the G98 arrangements operated by the GB distribution network operators. Northern Ireland has its own electricity distribution network and its own regulatory and connection framework. The Great Britain package does not automatically carry across.

That is a statement about the connection regime, not about the hardware. The physics is identical and the products are the same products. What is missing is the route that lets a householder connect one to a socket and record it in the way GB households will be able to.

What this means for households in Northern Ireland

A product listed as Compliant on the GB register is listed for the GB arrangements. That listing does not itself give you a right to connect in Northern Ireland.
Retailers selling into Northern Ireland should be clear about this. Treat "legal across the UK" in any listing as a claim to check, not a fact.
Anyone in Northern Ireland considering a plug-in device should contact their network operator first and ask directly what is permitted.
Conventional rooftop solar, installed and notified by a qualified installer, remains available in Northern Ireland through the normal route.

What would need to change

Broadly, three things would need to line up: a technical specification for plug-in devices recognised in Northern Ireland, a connection and notification route through the local network operator equivalent to G98 and Connect Direct, and a register or equivalent means for a household to confirm that a specific product is acceptable. Whether and when that happens is a matter for the relevant Northern Ireland authorities and network operator. We are not going to guess at a timetable, and we would treat any date circulating online with caution unless it comes from an official source.
