Can you add a battery to plug-in solar?

Short answer: no. Battery storage sits outside the plug-in solar route in Great Britain, and that shapes what these devices are good for more than any other single rule.

The rule

The plug-in route permits a solar device that generates and feeds the household circuit through an ordinary socket, within an 800VA AC output limit and up to 2,000Wp of panels, one per household. Storage is not part of that package. A product that bundles a battery into the same unit is not a compliant plug-in solar device here, however it is described in another market.

Why the exclusion exists

The plug-in concept only works because the device is simple. A panel and a microinverter that shuts down without a grid signal is a well-understood, output-limited object that a householder can safely position and plug in. That is what allowed the route to open without requiring an installer.

Storage changes the safety case. Lithium cells introduce fire and thermal-runaway considerations, siting requirements, ventilation questions and their own product standards. None of that fits an unsupervised, self-installed consumer device, so it is handled through different routes.

This is not Solar in a Box being cautious. It is what the plug-in route permits. Treat any seller offering a "plug-in solar battery kit" for Great Britain with real scepticism.

What it means in practice

No storage means no time-shifting. Everything the device generates is either used at that moment or exported, and for a plug-in device export is normally unpaid. So the value of the product is decided by how much of its output coincides with your demand — self-consumption, set out in detail on our savings page.

What you can do instead

Portable power stations are a different thing

Panels that charge a portable power station, which you then plug appliances into, are an off-grid arrangement. They do not feed your household circuits and are not plug-in solar. It can be a sensible setup for a shed with no mains supply — that comparison is covered in our sheds and workshops guide — but it is a separate product category with its own rules and limitations.

Might this change?

Policy in this area has moved recently and could move again. We are not going to speculate about timing, and you should not buy on the expectation of a rule change. Judge a device on what it lawfully does today; if the framework broadens later, that is a decision to make then.

Plug-in solar is legal in England, Scotland and Wales from 27 August 2026 subject to the published conditions, which do not include battery storage. Solar in a Box kits are in development and not yet available.
