Plug-in solar installation
The defining feature of plug-in solar is that you set it up yourself. No scaffolding, no certificate, no waiting list. That does not make it a job to rush — most of what goes wrong is mounting, not electrics.
Do you need an electrician?
For a standard setup, no. The device is a consumer appliance with a plug on the end; it goes into a socket you already have. That is the entire point of the plug-in route, and it is why no installer certification is involved.
You should call a qualified electrician if:
- There is no weatherproof outdoor socket where the device needs to plug in and one must be fitted. This is notifiable work in England and Wales and typically costs £120–£250.
- The consumer unit is old, lacks RCD protection, or you are unsure of its condition.
- The outbuilding's supply is a long, unknown-provenance run you have never had checked.
- Anything about the existing installation looks damaged, scorched or improvised.
Siting: the decision that sets your output
Before you buy a bracket, spend a sunny day watching the spot. Orientation and shading determine most of your generation, and neither is fixable later without moving the whole thing.
- South is best, at a tilt of roughly 20–35°. East or west costs you meaningfully; north is not worth the hardware.
- Shade is worse than it looks. A fence panel, chimney or single branch across a panel in the middle of the day disproportionately cuts output.
- Watch the season. A spot clear in June may sit in the shadow of a neighbour's roof in October.
- Cable length matters. The device has to reach a real socket without an extension lead, so pick a location that respects that.
Mounting and ballast
A solar panel is a sail. Wind loading is the thing that damages plug-in installations in Great Britain, not electrical failure.
- Ground frames are the easiest and safest option. Weight them properly — slabs, blocks or ballast trays — to the manufacturer's figure, and more if you are on an exposed site.
- Flat outbuilding roofs suit tilt frames, but check the structure will carry both the panel and its ballast. Many garden buildings will not.
- Walls and fences need fixings into something structural. A feather-edge fence panel is not structural.
- Balcony railings need railing-specific brackets and, usually, permission — see permissions and our balcony guide.
- Pitched house roofs are out. Working at height and penetrating a roof covering is professional work.
The electrical side
- Plug directly into a fixed socket. No extension leads, no reels, no multi-way adaptors.
- Outdoors, the socket must be weatherproof and rated for outdoor use, with the cover closed on the cable.
- Route cable so it cannot be trodden on, mown, strimmed or chewed; clip it, do not coil it.
- One device per household — you cannot add a second to increase output.
- Keep the DC connectors dry and seated before the panel sees daylight.
The sequence
- Check the kit against the rules: 800VA AC output, up to 2,000Wp DC, one per household.
- Choose and observe the location across a full day.
- Assemble the frame on the ground and position it.
- Ballast or fix it to the manufacturer's specification.
- Mount the panel, then the microinverter in its shaded, ventilated position.
- Connect DC, route and clip the AC cable, then plug in.
- Register the device — see registration.
- Keep the paperwork, and photograph the installation for your own records.
Renting or leasehold
Ask first. A tenancy agreement usually restricts alterations and anything fixed to the building, and a lease will normally cover the exterior and communal areas. A free-standing ground frame that leaves no marks is the easiest thing to get agreed.
Afterwards
- Rinse the panel occasionally — British rain does most of it, but pollen and dust build up.
- Re-check fixings and ballast after the first serious gale, then annually.
- Watch for vegetation growing into what was a clear line of sun.
- Keep the plug and socket cover in good condition.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need an electrician to install plug-in solar?
- Generally no. A plug-in device is designed to be set up by the owner and plugged into an existing socket. You do need an electrician if a new outdoor socket has to be fitted, or if the existing wiring is in poor condition.
- Can I plug it into an extension lead?
- No. The device should go directly into a fixed socket. Extension leads, reels, multi-way adaptors and daisy-chained sockets are not appropriate for a continuous generating source.
- How long does installation take?
- For most people an afternoon: assemble the frame, position and ballast it, fix the panel, mount the microinverter, route the cable and plug it in.
- Can I install plug-in solar on my roof myself?
- We would not recommend it. Working at height and fixing to a pitched roof is installer territory. Plug-in solar is designed for ground frames, flat roofs of outbuildings, walls, fences and balcony railings.
